No, there is a higher chance that the water level will drop below the bottom of the trunk if an angular cut is made. Instead, ensure that the base of the tree is cut flat and sits in a practical tree stand to maximise stability (see our tips for more details and related ideas).

Could I add chemicals to the water to boost the lifespan of my tree?

No, using either collected rainwater or tap water is the best solution. Adding chemical products to the water may dry out the tree and accelerate needle loss.
